8 month old can't eat table foods??

Question

I tried giving my almost 8 month old some scrambled eggs this morning because I want to start him on some table foods. It was not a good idea. He choked until he puked then for the last hour would have fits where he would randomly start coughing like it was still stuck in his throat or something. I literally chopped up the peices to what I thought was to small to choke on but I was obviously wrong. Anyone else experience this? I'm so scared to try to give him anything but his baby food and bottle now.. any advice or experience with this?

Although it’s scary to look at, baby will need to learn to gag on food in order to learn how to eat. I recommend following @babyledweanteam on Instagram she has helpful videos!

Thanks everyone for the insight! A good point was made and now that I think about it I dont think he was actually choking but gagging. It's still very alarming to see but I'll be better prepared now! I appreciate the advice!

Same, they don’t have teeth so it’s kinda hard to expect them to chew and know to swallow all of the food properly. Mine choked the other day, we are back on boob, bottle, & baby food consistency for a while!

Its possible it was the egg its self.. eggs are hard for little tummys to digest. I gave my little one some egg and she did somthing similer.. I even tried it a second time same thing but she eats other foods that way and is fine.. dont let it scare you off momma! Try something different and see how that goes

Following. Little miss started baby food and did really well now she refuses to eat any foods solid or puréed. Slowly she’s eating puffs and such but everything seems to make her break out in hives so I’m at a loss on how to help her move into the next stages of foods. Didn’t have this problem with her brother. He was ready to eat any and everything.

I would check out baby led weaning. They have information for how food should be cut and the difference between gagging and chewing. Babies don’t need teeth to chew. Chewing is the act of moving your jaw. My baby has no teeth but can eat steak. Babies can choke on any as floor purées, table food or even breastmilk. I takes times and patient. It’ll get better I promise.

It’s not that he can’t, he’s just learning and he wasn’t choking mama! He was gagging and figuring out what appropriate size bites he can take, I get really nervous still too and he’s been eating for two months. The only way they can learn is by doing it, maybe try researching baby led weaning and watching videos on gagging vs choking, that helped me. If they are actually choking they won’t be able to make a sound or breathe. Gagging, coughing and even puking can unfortunately be normal when they are learning. I’d say do some research and do what you’re comfortable with but eventually they have to learn to eat!

What about baby finger foods? They tend to be much better because they dissolve easily when eaten and are a good size for them to hold

When it comes to table food, what I feel most comfortable with is pinky length, of whatever the food may be, and the thickness of a pointer finger (sometimes even thicker). For eggs, however, I do soft boiled and then I cut it up into quarters. It really just depends on the food I sever him, but I still do get nervous with him just even having steak (which he LOVES and does so well with)

Some babies do better with bigger pieces that they can gum while they hold it. I haven’t tried it yet, but I’ve seen on Pinterest and Instagram to make like a sheet of eggs and cut it into sticks like French toast sticks and offer that way. Last night my baby went nuts over a stick of zucchini cut that way, the rest of us had bite size chunks but I saved a long piece for him. I gave him a bite size one too after he finished his stick but he did better with the stick.
