Pertussis test?

Has anyone had their baby tested for pertussis? My son has had "a cold" for a little more than a week and we have a regularly scheduled doctor visit tomorrow (I guess today since it's 2am lol) and I want to ask them about testing for pertussis. The reason is that my two year old, who has received ALL her vaccines in the course of the normal CDC recommended schedule including DTAP, also has the cold but the past couple days has had occasional coughing episodes that don't last a particularly long time but when they do she does kind of "whoop" (doing that gasps inhale thing between coughing). I have no clue where the kids would have gotten pertussis, we're all vaccinated and I got the vaccine when I was pregnant (both times, actually), and my husband had it and so has everyone we've been in contact with lately (even my sister and her kids who were visiting over the holidays and brought this "cold" with them).

Anyway, has anyone had their baby tested? How does it work? Did your doctor just do it in the office during your appointment, did you have to go somewhere to have it done, what does the process look like, do they take blood or some kind of swab? I have no clue at all what to expect (or honestly, even how to go about asking - hopefully my doctor doesn't think I'm overreacting to my daughters cough) so any info is appreciated!
