Did you have a doula during your labor? If so, did you find them helpful?

Looking into becoming one but want to see what you all think about your doulas.

I had a wonderful midwife and very supportive husband. If I were in a situation where I wasn’t confident that the doctors would listen to me or where my husband wasn’t able to be as supportive all throughout then I would have considered a doula, but would probably be more likely to just pick a close friend or my mom to be my advocate rather than hiring a doula.

I’ve hired one. This is my first time hiring one, though I wanted one for both my other labours. She is $700. I need one this time, we just moved across continents, if I go into labour my husband needs to be able to stay with the kids and I need to have support. My husband is great, a wonderful person and father but he’s clueless each time I’ve been in labour and I’m non vocal when I’m pain so I can’t guide him. The last two times he’s just ended up staring at me and holding my hand occasionally but mostly just staring at me awkwardly. I love him but he’s not great support. If it all works out how we hope my mom will be here as she’s flying in a bit before my due date (as both my kids came a week early) and can watch our two kids while my husband, the doula and I labour together. The doula can give my husband tips and guide him to help me or if he’s unable, she can support me. If not then at least I won’t be alone.

I just dont think they're worth the money. I thought for sure I wanted one until we I terviewed them and in like uh you're basically doing everything my husband or nurse will do but for $2k. I think if you're doing it alone or not going to a great hospital then I could see it being useful.

If I was single and didn’t have any family or support then I would have gotten one. It just didn’t seem worth the money since my husband is so supportive and with the way my birth went, I really didn’t need one, my nurse was great. I’m a fairly private person though and it seemed like way too intimate of a thing to invite basically a stranger to.
