I know this can't be healthy, but how do I fix it??
So my 5.5 month old (still) doesn't sleep. I didn't think it was possible for a baby who never got past waking up multiple times a night to have a sleep regression, but somehow he managed. Somewhere around 3.5 months he decided to get a jump start on that 4 month sleep regression and it hasn't stopped since. It's been two. Freaking. Months. Last night, I fought and fought and fought to get him to sleep. I tried everything, nursing, binky, letting him cry for a few minutes to see if he would self soothe, brought him into bed with me, put him in his swing, multiple diaper changes, burped him, you name it. He finally gave in somewhere around 2 am. We started bedtime just before 8. He slept until about 6:30, so about 4.5 hours, and he figured he was done for the night at that point. I had to work today, exhausted as I was, but according to my husband, he only took about another 4.5 hours worth of naps throughout the day. So in a 24 hour period, he had 9 hours of sleep. Maybe that's good for an adult, but surely that can't be healthy for a baby? This is a fairly regular occurrence. Even on a good night where he doesn't fight going to sleep so hard, he's still up about every hour or so, and won't go back to sleep without intervention. I don't know what to do at this point. He needs more sleep, but I can't figure out how to convince him of that. I need more sleep, too, but right now, as it appears we're going to have another night like last night, I'm just really worried about his health. The sleep deprivation does not help my PPD, which at one point got so bad I was hurting myself to keep from hurting him. I've gotten help for that (ongoing), but everyone agrees the best thing for me is more rest. Which is a nice dream, but how? I've tried all the tips given to me thus far, none of them seem to be working. Anybody have any other tips? Any similar experiences? What did you do?
