PSA on d&c
I had a missed miscarriage in May last year, I was 12 weeks along. After it was discovered that my babies heart stopped beating I was told there were a couple options. I could try to pass it at home or have a d&c. I was recommended a d&c because since I was farther along I would have more tissue to pass and my risk of complications was higher. I decided to get the d&c. Little did I know there is a hugeeee price difference. I was naive in thinking a miscarriage should be covered by insurance I mean why would it not. Especially if having a d& c was to prevent infection or an emergency situation from happening. Well I was wrong. I have mediocre insurance $3,500 deductible with coinsurance after deductible is meet. I am self employed a pay about $500 a month for insurance for myself. Well now about 10 months later I am still fighting with the hospital and insurance company and I have to pay $3,900 for my miscarriage. Yes you read that right 3,900 for a baby I didn’t even get to have. If I knew I’d have to pay the full deductible plus extra to have essentially an abortion then I would have 100% atleast tried to pass it at home before I went to the hospital.
I wish I knew this before I went through with the procedure and I hope this can atleast inform some others in similar situations so you are not slapped with a huge bill. I know it’s the last thing you want to do when you are told you lost your baby but please contact your insurance companies so you are not paying a absurd amount.
