Pregnancy test at 14dpo?

Question

I did a trigger shot, then had my IUI two days later. My RE told me to test exactly 14 days after my IUI and she said if it’s negative I should stop taking my progesterone. I’m just curious, if it’s negative does it for sure mean I’m not pregnant? I’ve heard of women getting their positive way past their period date, so how can I be so sure that it’ll be accurate at 14dpIUI?

Normally at Day 14, you'd have at least a faint line if it's positive. The home tests are sensitive to detect an amount that your HCG should be at, by day 14. If you're measuring lower than that, there's a chance it's not a viable pregnancy, if there is one at all. In IUIs, since they administer a trigger shot, they are sure of your ovulation. So at 14dpo it's good enough to test and stop progesterone if negative.
Typically women who find positives later weren't tracking/inducing ovulation, and that is why there could be a miscalculation of dates.
All of this is statistics, and there will always be exceptions. But those are rare.
If there's even the faintest line, there's merit in doing a beta HCG blood test to determine exactly what level you're at - and usually they'll have you continue progesterone in that case, till there's an elevated HCG.
There's one more angle to the progesterone. And this depends on what dose you were taking, and whether you're diagnosed with endo. But let's say you test negative at 14dpo, stop the progesterone, and let's say you fall in the small group that had a positive but it was a late implantation or something and hence didn't show on the stick - if you don't get your period in 3-4 days, your doctor will usually ask you to do a beta just to check what's going on. In that case, you haven't caused much damage by stopping progesterone for a few days. You've laid a good, thick lining already, and if the beta comes back positive you can just resume the progesterone as soon as you know - and you'll be fine. No loss there.
I'm sorry for the long message. I've had 6 IUIs (today's day 14 and i tested negative), so I figured it might be helpful to share details since I've asked myself, my doctors and fertility friends similar questions along the way.
