When do they fertilize the egg?

Hi everyone. My husband and I are going to be using a surrogate. We’re looking for an IVF clinic and it got me thinking. Do they fertilize the egg and then freeze it, or do they just freeze the egg then fertilize it and inject?

They can do either but in your case, you would make the embryos and freeze until transfer.      
In cases of women saving their eggs for the future they freeze the eggs and wait until they meet the person they want to have children with.

They put the sperm in the egg after they retrieve your eggs.  Then they call you the next day and let you know how many fertilize. Then depending on what kind of transfer is being done, they grow the embryos 3 or 5 days (every now and again you could have some 6 or even 7 day blasts). That's a quick synopsis at least!

You can choose what you want them to do. If you have a partner and you know you want to have his kids only, you might as well create embryos right away. If you want to have potentially other options, freeze eggs and create embryos when you are ready with whoever you want.

Hey depends- what your referring to is a fresh vs frozen transfer. Usually if you don’t have any complications from the injections or egg retrieval and don’t opt for genetic testing they will do fresh.

Hi! They fertilize them the same day they are retrieved, and then they see how they develop. If you are doing a fresh transfer they wait until day 3 or 5 and then transfer one and if you are doing frozen they will freeze all once ready.
