Security blanket necessary?

I have never understood the use of these things. (FTM) I see them. Been told give them to baby n then what? It is neither a toy nor a cloth. I have some but they are packed away in the drawer as I don't really know what the use is. Does it have a special soothing effect like a pacifier?

My son never got into “security” things and I don’t think they can be forced, however, he’s obsessed with his Woolino sleep sack. We don’t put him in it anymore, but he likes to cuddle up with it at night, and when he’s feeling extra grumpy he often goes to his room and gets his Woolino sleep sack then walks around with it cuddled next to his face. It makes him feel comforted and safe. We’ve tried giving him other blankets (even the Woolino blanket which is exactly the same material), but he rejects everything except for his sleep sack.

My sons little step brother has one. He’s 3 years old and still super attached to it. Thing is, it’s not a traditional security blanket... it’s his moms night gown and he carries it around with him everywhere. lol

Both of my kids have a lovey. I usually put it in their crib after 6 months when they begin to stir more and realize you can leave the room. I rub it on myself so that it has my scent and lay it in the crib. My kids also use it to teeth on in the crib to help them fall asleep. Basically it’s that teddy bear that the kid drags all over the place and helps them feel secure.

Some babies are comforted by them, and they can be nice transition objects when they’re older like if they have their little blankie buddy with a babysitter or going to a new place. My son started loving his around 9 months. He has one like this except a panda. When he was teething he chewed on the knots a lot. He’s 3 now and his panda still helps him stay calm in stressful situations and helps him sleep. I started giving it to him basically when he was born so later it was familiar.
