Super long birthing story!
I found out early on around 28 weeks that my little man was measuring small. I was ordered to go for a growth scan to get a better picture of his growth. We soon found out that our baby was measuring 3 to 4 weeks behind. His legs and arms were the smallest of his body measuring in the 9th percentile, everything else was measuring normal give or take a weeks difference. I was then ordered to have weekly growth scans and twice weekly CTG (NST) readings. He kept growing which was good however always measured the 3-4 weeks behind. The doctors and midwives said, as long as he keeps growing and his movements were good they weren't worried. I had a growth scan at 36 weeks, he dropped from the 9th percentile to the 7th, again I was told as long as he keeps growing, he is okay. I went for another growth scan at 38+2 January 13th, his growth had slowed down a lot he was now measuring in the 2nd percentile, the blood flow from the placenta had decreased and the placenta was starting to fail. I was sent to the day assessment unit and spoke with the doctor. They suddenly weren't happy and he needed to come out. It was safer for him on the outside then inside. They asked to do a vaginal exam to see how my cervix was, while the doctor did that she asked if it was okay to perform a stretch and sweep. Honestly, I had heard so much about it and how "painful" it was, i considered saying no. Yet, I found myself agreeing to it because I figured If my waters broke on their own it would be better than being induced. For all first time mothers out there stressing about a possible stretch and sweep, IT WASNT PAINFUL! It was definitely uncomfortable, but not painful for me anyway. (I'm a sook when it comes to pain.)
So on the 14th of January I was set to go to the hospital at 12pm ready to be induced. Let me tell you as a first time mother, I was freaking out. I didnt know what to expect, I was always told being induced hurts a lot more than natural labour. I was told by the doctors it could take days, i was stressing about that because let's face it, NO women wants to be in pain for days, with or without medication. Those of you who were in labour for days, I applaud you all! 👏
I got into my hospital room at 12pm and had the foly balloon inserted at 2.30. If anyone ever tells you that doesn't hurt, punch them in the face. It hurt so much. The contractions started at 5.30, they started off as really bad poo pains, eventually they moved to my back and hips. They were coming 4-5 minutes apart lasting around 1 minute. They stayed this way until I moved to birth suite at 2.30. At 3am 15th of January they broke my waters. The contractions from that became unbearable. I made to to 4cm dilated before opting for the epidural. I felt so much better, at 5am i was finally able to sleep. I slept on and off for hours. My little man's heart rate started to drop with each contraction. So they had to perform cervical exam after cervical exam. They had to put a wire to his head to track his heart rate, which didn't work because it got tangled in his hair. So they placed another one in, they had to perform 3 procedures (I forgot what they are called) where they insert a tube inside the vagina to get to the baby (similar to the papsmear tube) they had to make a cut on his scalp to see if he was in distress because of his heart rate dropping. While they were doing this, the doctors and midwives were laughing and having a joke while I was in so much pain. I ended up telling them to hurry the fuck up. Which made them stop fucking around. My contractions basically stopped so they started me on medications to kick them up again. I was turned side to side trying to his my babies heart beat every time it dropped. Come 12.30 the doctors told me it was time for an emergency c section. I agreed, as much as I wanted a vaginal delivery it was best for a c-section. While in there they administered more epidural, the first round worked, the second round didn't. I could feel every ounce of pulling and pressure which caused so much pain. They ended up putting me to sleep. I'm sad I didn't get the skin to skin contact, i didn't get the delayed cord clamping and Daddy didn't get to cut the cord.
Mikaeus Lee, was born at 1.20pm on January 15th 2020 at 38+4. He weighs 5.2pound (2.4kg) he's currently in special care on oxygen and attached to all kinds of wires. I'm hoping tomorrow will be the day I get to hold my baby.
