Induction story with super quick birth!
I loved reading everyone’s birth stories so here’s mine! I was due 1/25.
On NYE I had an ultrasound to monitor my Polyhydramnios, I hadn’t been feeling baby move as much so they put me on the monitors and ended up sending me to L&D due to contractions being detected every 2 minutes. This ultimately ended with me being sent home and having consistent, painful contractions for weeks with very little cervical progress until I could be induced at 39 weeks. Ended up scheduling to go in at 9 pm on the 17th due to a large snow storm coming on the 18th, my OB just wanted me to be there and admitted. He warned me that I might be “parked” until midnight and not much was going to happen right away. I was in the care of the on call doctors due to my OB deciding to retire from delivering midway through my pregnancy due to his own medical reasons.
So we get settled at 9, the unit is quiet and we’re thinking I’m just going to be doing some cervical ripening and sleeping for the night. Couldn’t be more wrong! The doctor checked me and said I was a “good 3” and didn’t need the ripening so they decided to start pitocin right away. With my first daughter I was induced at 36+5 for preeclampsia and had a 50 hour labor with only 20 minutes of it being pushing. So I was no stranger to pitocin and expected a long day. I told my husband to get some sleep so he laid down and I hung out and chatted with the nurse. By 11 I was bumped to 4 on the pitocin and getting pretty uncomfortable. I was shocked because I had gone up to 30 with my first so 4 seemed like nothing. My hospital had recently gotten new wireless monitors to encourage movement during labor and I was pumped to try them, around midnight we tried them but they couldn’t keep the baby’s heart rate on it because she was being so active. I was bumped to 6 on the pitocin and asked to call the anesthesiologist for an epidural because the contractions were getting incredibly long and painful. From the start they were only 3-4 min apart and at this point they were 2. We woke my husband and by 1:15 it was placed. My experience was better this time around and the placement wasn’t nearly as painful. However with my first it never kicked in so I assumed it wasn’t done right. I ended up being wrong about that lol.
I told my husband to go back to sleep because I’d need him later, and I knew I’d get annoyed with him constantly asking if I was OK. He had also worked all day and I knew he was exhausted. By 2 I was up to 8 on pitocin and I realized the epidural wasn’t working even with pushing the boost buttons. My amazing nurse had me on my side with the peanut ball to try and help the pain and open my hips and I just remember staring at the clock then looking at my husband thinking “I’ll probably wake him up soon” because it was getting too painful for me to deal with without distraction. My nurse called the doctor in to check me because all I could feel was intense pressure and pain. At 2:31 I was a 7 and they broke my water, I had the nurses wake my husband. He jumped up and said “I have to pee don’t have her yet!” 😂 (Our first came within 20 min after my water breaking)
At 2:40 they checked me again because the pressure was unreal. She said I was a 9.5 but after the next contraction I was fully dilated. I had to start pushing before the attending was even there but I could’ve cared less at that point, I was super comfortable with the resident and things happened so quickly. I only pushed for THREE minutes and she was out. I was and still am in shock about it all. We got to leave the hospital at 2 pm the next day. The doctor thought I’d be ok tear wise because she said my pushed were very controlled and obviously it wasn’t long at all but I ended up having a 2nd degree and a few abrasions which I’m chalking up to her size and the speed of her coming. She put me through hell for almost 3 weeks of early labor just to pop out that quickly!
