Expired car seat?

Question

Anyone have experience or opinions on “expired” car seats? I’ve been reading up and the US doesn’t REQUIRE manufacturers to give expiration dates, but they are recommended. 
The car seat I really want is a Britax, and very expensive. A close friend has offered me their car seat, same model, for free. But it is expired. 
That makes me nervous, but for those of you who have used a car seat longer than 6 years specifically what are your opinions?

Do not use an expired seat. Buy a new one. It's literally one of the most important safety equipment products your baby will use. Don't cut corners on this.

Don’t ever use an expired car seat or a used one. Just go buy a new one. I have a Britax and a  Nuna Rava EXEC  that I bought at Nordstrom. Albee baby is also a great store to buy car seats from. I’ve bought things from Albee Baby and they are great! 
But don’t ever put your child at risk with expired or used car seats. It’s not worth it and it’s dangerous. Just buy the car seat your want.

Britax is a really good company and you can get reasonably priced 3 in 1 sears from them to fit u til your kid is pretty big. If you need to look even cheaper, Evenflo, safety1st and other cost less. I haven’t looked at the specs, but maybe a cosco scenera would work for you? Please use a new seat, it’s not worth the potential worst case scenario for you to use an expired one to save money. You can literally buy everything else used.
