Is it rude not to open gifts at baby shower?

I have anxiety really bad. When I am put on the spot or have to be the center of attention, I start to sweat really badly and get all shaky. I dont want to be rude but I also dont want to sit in the front of the room opening gifts.

One of my friends had a baby shower where she asked everyone not to wrap their presents they set them all up on a table that way everyone could wander around and look at all the cute things but saved all the time and hassle of opening the presents. I thought it was a cool idea espically for like you said if the idea of all the attention bothers you!! 😊

I didn’t open them, I refused lol for the same reasons you feel and no one seemed to care or be surprised. Honestly who wants to sit around and watch someone open baby presents anyway? We had a co-Ed shower too so I think the beer and the men helped deter any thoughts of a traditional shower 😂

It’s not rude. It’s an old school tradition, and ultimately your decision.
I get pretty bad anxiety, and mine peaks when it comes to gifts aswell.
You shouldn’t have to sacrifice your mental well-being, just to please others.

I’ve been to burthday parties where they had a sign about not opening presents and said you wanted to see the birthday child open your gift to just bring it over to them at some point during the party. You could do the same thing for a shower. That way anyone who had an issue with not opening could still see you open theirs.

I think the gift opening process is awkward and can lead to people feeling very uncomfortable. Not everyone has the same ability to give. Plus I hate being stuck watching it all. I usually leave showers early to avoid it and know many Moms who do the same.

I feel like it’s a mixed bag. Some people love to watch the gift part others could care less. We opened gifts at the end when people were slowly leaving and the lingering people watched. It’s fun I think. But I don’t think it’s rude to not want to.

Not at all! I’m not opening gifts because I know no one really wants to sit and watch me open them for an hour 😂 my cousin had a no-wrap shower so that all the gifts were “on display” and she walked through and looked at them without having to sit and open and have all the spotlight on her. Might be a good compromise for you!
