Should parents be allowed to have their children back after abusing drugs?
I saw a news story today about a mother who smothered her 3 children (age 3, 1, and 7mo). In the report it stated that the children had previously been removed from the home due to the mother abusing drugs such as meth. Its such a big story because people are on opposite sides as to if she should have gotten her children back from dcs in the first place. Some said yes she should have gotten them back if she followed her steps. Some said no, absolutely not. That those children were put in danger the moment they were sent home, and once a druggie, always a druggie. There were a few that claimed there should be a requirement, those that are serious about recovery have to prove it, by staying clean for a year, before having the ability of custody back. I’m curious what you all think.
I myself having 3 sisters that were adopted through dhs, know first had that being back with mom is not always the best option (but dhs custody isn’t that great of an option either). Personally I don’t like either options as they are. I don’t think the state should be so willing to give kids back, but I don’t like the system as it is for the kids. I think if the parents stay clean for longer than 8 months as well as go through a rehab program, that in itself weeds out the people that don’t actually care about getting their kids back.
