Was I smart or insensitive? UPDATE

Hi ladies
I have been talking to this guy online for 3 months and we plan to meet in February.  We did text, video and phone...so he is legit.
He is on a business trip out of the country and his mom is taking care of his kids. Throughout the relationship he says....they are OURS and he swears that they will love me.
Ok....2 weeks into his trip, his mom who is her 80s is taking care of the kids and uses his card (with permission) but forgets the PIN causing the 
account to freeze. The bank said he choose to give his card, when he returns he can get it reactivated. 
Sooo he's frustrated at this point and asks for my help. Because of how we met, and living in 2 places, I honestly said no.
If he met me first, I would feel comfortable.  He told me that I don't care about if the kids have nothing to eat, how would I take care of them when we settle down.
Was I wrong? He stopped talking to me after  I said I didn't like his tone or attitude. 
At the end of the day, I am covering my ass...love or no love.
Did I do the best thing? Sorry I did do checks on the pictures and other info. I also mirrored his behavior,  so my info is safe.
THANK YOU SO MUCH, I WAS IN WTF MODE FOR AWHILE. I WAS FEELING LIKE CRAP YESTERDAY BUT HE CAUGHT ME IN PMS WEEK, SO I LET HIM GET A FEW DIGS. It is sad that people can't do the norm and get a fucken job like the rest of us!
UPDATE 2ND!!!
LADIES I COULDN'T LET IT GO AND DID SOME MORE DIGGING...AND I FOUND MY MAN ON FB.....THE PAGE LOOKED ODD, VERY EMPTY. I GOT ON A GROUP PAGE OF SCAMMERS/FRAUD COMPLAINTS....THEY FOUND THE TRUE OWNER OF THE PICTURES!! 
I SENT A MESSAGE TO HIM, LETTING HIM KNOW THAT SOMEONE SCAMMED ME USING HIS PICTURES, WAITING FOR A RESPONSE. I HAVE SCREENSHOTS AS EVIDENCE.

I think he’s just trying to scam you and get money out of you . But if he’s being fr that’s even weirder like referring to his kids as “ours” he hasn’t even met you . Are you sure he even has kids ??? I don’t know a single parent who would say that .

I had a similar experience. I had been talking to a guy for a little over a month. We were going to meet and I had to cancel at the last minute. The next time we were going to meet he suddenly had to go out of the country for work. I’d kind of been suspicious the entire time but wanted to see how it played out and what he was really up to. We’d talked on the phone and face timed and everything and he seemed like a decent guy and was real haha, but I was still suspicious. He was overly sweet and caring. It was so nice of course but it was extreme. He would tell me about work, but I’m so much detail that I technical terms and jargon for his job that I didn’t know what he was talking about exactly and it didn’t really make sense. It was almost like he was just reading things off the internet or just regurgitating facts. At first I just thought he was extremely intelligent but then after a few days of that I was like nah...he’s trying to distract me and make it seem like he’s extremely involved and legit when in all actuality he’s not at all.  The he said he suddenly had to go to Turkey to oversee some engineering project his company won the bid for. It was the day we were going to meet and he said he was so sorry and he’ll keep in touch and on and on. I didn’t believe him. Then when he was supposedly oversees, he kept texting me and I was like ummm not even happening. If he were texting me it would be so expensive. I have an iPhone and he had something else so it wasn’t an iMessage, it was a text message. He said he felt such a connection he just had to stay in contact no matter the roaming charges. I’d been in a relationship before when my boyfriend traveled a lot and only texted when he had WiFi or we used other apps so it would be free. Then after about a week of this game he said he’s in such a bind and doesn’t know what to do. He needs some money to get an app so he can finish this project for work. He asked if I could buy him an iTunes gift card. “A hundred dollars should do the trick babe, please. Just scratch off the number on the card and send it to me” ummm no thank you! I told him no I’m sorry. He begged and I said no I’m sorry but I’m not going to be able to plus we’ve never even met. He was annoyed and said if there was another way to get it he would but he can’t. I told him no again and he didn’t talk to me again. A few days later I just said Too bad I’m not as naive and gullible as you thought I was. He then responded that that wasn’t the case at all. And I’ve never heard from him since. He was just sooooo smooth the whole time and really good and making me special and he was really into me. Glad I went with my gut. Another red flag was that he had about everything possible situation/experience happen to him in his life. His dad died when he was you g. His mom has cancer but she survived and is a fighter. It was just he and his mom growing up. Life of a single parent. Just on and on and on. Not saying those things are bad and I’m sure there are people who have had all of those, but the way he presented it was interesting. And he always talked about how close he is with his mom...so if he’s that close get money from her, use another card, buy the gift card yourself, have your company buy it...so many ways to get the money. And $100 was a lot to just ask upfront. Anyway sorry for the long post but I felt it was important to share and might give you ladies something to watch out for—-just some of the red flags I noticed.
