Cold or something else?

My LO has had colds before but the past few days he wakes up screaming/crying alllll night and really hard to calm down. He recently got a cold but he seems to be in pain.. and he normally tugs at his ears with teething so I cant tell if it's more than usual. The doctor actually checked his ears on Tuesday so I dunno if it could be an ear infection or not? We've already done tylenol and motrin tonight I don't know what else to do! He seemed fine today until the last hour before bed.
