100% depends on the job. In my current position if I need to leave early, I just come in earlier or take a shorter lunch since me leaving early doesn’t mean someone on my team has to cover me. But when I worked in other jobs, there always needed to be coverage so I would have to talk to my boss ahead of time to ensure I wasn’t putting out any colleagues.

It depends on your job and your relationship with your boss. I’d talk to your boss if you aren’t sure. 
I said I’d just leave for myself because my boss doesn’t even work in my office and he’s explicitly said to me “I don’t care what you do as long as you get your work done” lol so I leave as soon as I’m done with my work, sometimes it’s 15 mins early, sometimes it’s an hour late 🤷🏻‍♀️
But most people’s positions arent like that so I’d recommend asking unless you’ve had a similar convo with your boss.

I think this depends on your job. I work in an office, so I would just let my boss know as I was leaving. For my student jobs in retail or restaurants, I would definitely let them know, at the latest when starting my shift, because they needed the hands/people and it was policy.

My workplace is pretty laid back, as long as all your work is done you can leave whenever you need. I’m usually the last one to leave so there’s no one here to tell anyway. But if my manager/boss is still here, I’ll give them a heads up.

If it's an appt, I put it on our department calendar. If I just wanted to leave early for something like on Friday and i have to drive somewhere far, I'll ask permission. One time I forgot to update the calendar and just left. No one has ever sat me down about it. It's not a big deal where I work though. We lean more towards the "as long as you get your shit done" mentality. We need to maintain fairly consistent work hours but it's not a huge deal if you're not like regularly abusing their leniency.

I always let my boss know if there any changes in my schedule at all! It’s very important to do so in my opinion. Failing to do so, can cost you your job.
