Can contractions just disappear?

Yesterday I was having bad contractions and back pain that lasted all day. Irregular but they were definitely intense to a degree of discomfort.

I felt sure it would progress into full on labor eventually but today I woke up and I’ve hardly had any cramping or back pain.

Is this normal?

(I’ve experienced Braxton Hicks before, and they were not as painful as yesterday’s pains so I know yesterday’s pains were something more/maybe early labor?)
