Pregnancy Belt Discussion

Lauren

So this past week I’ve been having some worsening back pain. My doctor said that at about this time of gestation she recommends a belt to help. She suggested one that I can adjust the level of support with and an affordable one too.

Now, in the office I didn’t say anything. But I immediately thought about how bad of an idea that is this early on. I’m only 25 weeks, I haven’t gained much weight at all either. And I have scoliosis with a history of being back braced as a child.

Because I was back braced for my scoliosis, my muscles had atrophied and it took me years to get my entire torso back to where it should be muscular wise. It kind of bothered me that it was suggested I start bracing so early on.

Has anyone else thought about this? Shouldn’t we be encouraged to do core and back strengthening yoga poses or something instead?

Personally I think why would we “wear a brace and rest” now when what we’ve previously been told that exercising and maintaining a good core will HELP the pregnancy, the delivery, and the postpartum healing.

Just looking to get a good discussion going. Perhaps you guys have belts to suggest, haven’t considered these same concerns, or even have good exercises or tips for back pain to share! 🙂
