Mortgage pre approval

My spouse and I just applied for a pre approval on a mortgage last night and I got an email saying our application was denied. I didn’t know you could get denied a Pre approval? Is this right? I thought the pre approval was just to show roughly how much your approved to spend? Am I wrong? Am I missing something?
