Toddler speech
Long post—-I’m wondering how much other toddlers are talking at this age? I know speech development can vary from child to child, but I’m wondering if my child is “within range”? He knows lots of individual words (100+ words?) but some of the words can be difficult to make out or he pronounces them much differently than the actual word and I’ve just caught onto what he means. He can say short phrases like, “doggy sleeping”, “where’d Daddy go?”, “I hungry”, “I gah go potty”, etc. Other times, he will string multiple “words” together and I can’t make out a single thing he says. He uses the word “more” after words, like he saw a baby and then a second baby and exclaimed, “baby more!” Lately, he’s been getting caught up on words, like he was trying to say chocolate milk and repeatedly said, “choco cako choco cako milk.” My rational side says that this is probably normal and he’s doing just fine, but my anxious side wonders how will I know if he’s behind and what if I delay him from therapy that he might need. I should add, my husband and his sisters all had speech impediments and had to do therapy, primarily due to over active saliva glands (husband still struggles with this.) I had a tongue tie at birth that was clipped and a very short tongue which made things a little harder for me, but never had an evident issue. We were told our son had a tongue tie at birth and it was clipped at the hospital as well. Thoughts?
