I received A LOT of free help from my midwifes and the team at the hospital following my daughters birth however it didn't really help me. I was considering getting a lactation consultant but managed to find help from a midwife who took her time and really made sure I understood everything. I think a lactation consultant would be beneficial in the days after birth. More often than not breastfeeding is difficult, clumsy and feels very unnatural. This came as a shock to me as I presumed it would come naturally ( although it does to some mums and babies). You both have to learn and find ways in which you are both comfortable. Here are a few YouTube videos I found useful. I also sent them to a friend who found them helpful. https://youtu.be/OUqRVSeBpY8https://youtu.be/0iZohdhAA1Mhttps://youtu.be/WODL4nYjTtohttps://youtu.be/uXbQl-MBAuo

can you not get help for free through your midwife?

My hospital had breastfeeding clinics twice weekly for free which were one to ones I’d explore other channels before spending that much

Most of us HV are midwives. In my trust we get breastfeeding training every year and we run breastfeeding clinic every week.. Breastfeeding is the core of our practice besides we also have Lactation consultants who could help mums further .

I went to the breastfeeding clinic at the same nhs hospital I gave birth in, my community midwife referred me. I git seem the next day & they saw me once a week for 6 weeks, even loaned me a breast pump- they were fab (& didn’t cost me anything)!
