If a family member has been struggling with drugs forever , even after help given to them do you cut them out of the family?

I lost my brother almost two years ago now to an overdose. He struggled for a little over 15 years. It was devastating, I still cry all the time because I will never see him again. I wouldn’t ever suggest cutting off a loved one because someday they may really be gone and you can’t ever get that time back. There’s healthy ways of having contact, you can still be there for them without enabling them. Addiction is a seriously complex illness, it holds such power over them.

This is a tough one. I think if someone is toxic, family or friend, you have to do best for you but I also believe people deserve support. I was an alcoholic and so was my mother. I was unfortunate enough to be raised in that environment. I managed to get my mother sober 10 years ago and a long time after I finally joined her in sobriety. Where as family didn’t give up on her they did with me. I eventually found peace and happiness but often resented my family for turning their backs on me. However that being said I can also imagine it’s hard having someone who’s an addict in the family who doesn’t want to help themselves. You need to do what’s best for you. I honestly don’t think there’s a right or wrong as such. Everyone has different thresholds and can only take so much

There is no exact answers for this.. but I can tell you my experience. My mother has been an opioid addict since I was 8 years old. My memories of my later childhood all include my mom being passed out and me thinking she was dead.. her stealing from me and my other family, going to jail for stealing from stores, getting a felony drug offense, and bringing random men in and out of our home while I took care of my newborn brother. 
My mom was crazy.. she put me through a lot mentally because the drugs really messed her up. Around 15 I completely cut her out of my life and my brother and I lived with our grandparents. I didn’t hear from her for 8 years.. When I did hear from her she was in the hospital because she had a heart attack due to her overusing meth. She’s only 39 and has already had 3 heart attacks. My husband and I moved her in and attempted to help her get clean. She continued using and stole from my husband and I. Stole money, stole jewelry, even stole a cross that we bought for my grandmother while she battled cancer. We kicked her out and haven’t spoken since.
 I am 38 weeks pregnant with my own daughter... and I can say that although I do sometimes wish I could reach out to her and have her involved. I know she is toxic. I won’t expose my daughter to that. 
Long story short.. I’d suggest if you have done everything you can and the environment around you in toxic and stressful. You don’t need to put yourself through that.. even for family. Remember, they won’t get clean until THEY want to be clean.

I think if they take advantage of your help and kindness and turn around and keep heading down the wrong path they need to be cut off, there's no point in stressing and bringing your own life down to support someone who was no interest in getting themselves better. If they actually put effort into changing then by all means show your support for them. Speaking from experience with my sons father, his mother tried everything to help him, I tried everything, my family tried to help him, everyone tried to help him and he still blames everyone but himself for his issues so we had to cut him off. You can't help people that don't want to be helped.

I say No but defiantly limit their involvement  and level of interaction?  🤷‍♀️ 
Struggling is one thing.... stealing or being dangerous to other people in the family is another. 
Cutting them off completely could make them feel isolated and make recovery harder. But don’t be an inabler.

I don’t think you cut them out for just doing drugs. But you definitely set strict boundaries.

Yes. I keep my aunt at a distance because she refuses to stop abusing prescription drugs. She had the nerve to ask if I’d let her babysit my kid ,and I was like hell no that’s asking for cps to get called no ma’am.

As some one who has /had drug users in my family. Yup I’d cut them off I have 3 children to worry about . I do not have time to deal with that crap. I’ve seen what it does I’ve seen the over doses over seen it all.

This is a hard one, my SO sister is a drug addict we’ve helped her my so went mental because she sat in a room opposite ours in his flat doing drugs when I was pregnant we’ve all tired to help time and time again she says she clean but she’s still drinking and smoking weed, then I see her and she doesn’t look clean at all to me, we have cut her off don’t want her to know our address see our kids or nothing really, but his dad told her where we live 🙄 she showed up once but if she showed up again I wouldn’t answer the door.
