IUD PSA
So I just got my second Mirena IUD (the hormonal one) at 7 months pp and wanted to mention some things you might not know...
I was reading through the leaflet that comes with it listing side effects and stuff and it said that although the earliest it can be placed is 6 weeks pp they recommend doctors wait until 12 weeks pp.
If you're breastfeeding or are fewer than 36 weeks pp the chances of perforation (the IUD poking through your uterus) are increased.
I know it's common practice to place them at the 6 weeks check up but maybe talk to your doctor about alternative methods of contraception until your body has had time to fully heal. My doctor refused to put it in earlier than 6 months pp because the uterus is still "soft like butter" and I'm glad she had my best interests at heart. I took the mini pill in the interim.
I LOVE the Mirena and understand it's not for everyone, but I feel like some doctors aren't giving us all the information and setting us up for potentially dangerous situations!
Ok, PSA over!
