This is aimed at my now ex boyfriend, but his mum seems to think it’s an excuse :/

It’s not an excuse... like being high or drunk doesn’t get you off the hook. But it is fair to say that substances alter a persons behavior and thinking. That being said... if they are having issues with drugs/alcohol affecting their lives and relationships they should be seeking treatment of some kind.

It might be the reason but its certainly not an excuse. IMO there is no excuse for ever cheating in any way. If you arent happy in a relationship you end it first then find someone else. Personally I wouldn't want to be with someone who is drinking and taking drugs enough that they seem to feel they arent in control of their behaviour anyway and the fact that his mother is seeing this as an excuse for his behaviour would ring alarm bells too, hes obviously never been taught to be decent or be held accountable for his actions. Keep him as an ex and find someone who will treat you right.
