This morning I came across this news article. I live in Denver, CO. Insurances are thinking on covering some infertility treatments. I read the comments and it broke my heart how some people are just so insensitive and heartless. What is your stance as a person who is TTC? Do you think insurances should cover some fertility treatments? Do you think having a child is YOUR choice therefore your OK with paying everything out of pocket?

I mean most insurance covers delivery so the argument that having children shouldn't be covered is already flawed. I think there should be some help if its medically necessary but not the normal coverage amount. Maybe like 20% or something just to help out.

I’m on the fence. I had this discussion with a friend of mine that went through IVF because her husband has low sperm count. I don’t think it should be 100% covered, but insurance companies should partially cover it. Either that, or lower the cost. 
My husband’s partially covers it. We didn’t use it.

Insurance literally pays for pregnancy and birth. The “we paid so you should” comment makes no sense. 🙄 
Fertility is a medical issue, of course it should be covered.

The entire medical system needs to be overhauled in the U.S. No clue what all the solutions are but it's a mess.
Unfortunately insurance companies make kajillions of dollars, but would still pass the costs onto customers. 
Not to mention, some infertility treatments are only like 25% effective. 
It's very complicated but I'd like to see insurance cover part of the costs.
Something to think about when you're shopping for medical insurance.

I think as a medical issue insurance should help cover costs even if it is not the whole bill (copayment sir co insurance). Adoption is a wonderful beautiful thing , but just like fertility treatments , costs a LOT.  And is very hard to do . When you have your own baby you don’t have to go to countless meetings , have a social worker come into your home, make sure everything you do or have or decide to do line up with what the agency thinks is “best for the child “ (i.e”they can’t have siblings” “they can’t share a room with another” or “the child would do best living in this or that situation”)   Saying that is the only option and  also saying “having a baby is a gift not a need” is pathetic.   They are a gift ,  but anyone who wants one should be able to have one and we have meds to help today.  Even if not 100% successful why should they not have a chance?  That makes me sad . Very sad . That is like saying that “that person ate bacon every day so they should pay for their own heart condition!”

For the most part I do believe it should be covered.  If the medical treatment is needed to achieve biologically normal function, then yes, it should be covered. There are plenty of medical treatments that fall into this category that aren’t “life threatening.”

Insurance as a private business can cover whatever it wants. It would be up to the consumer to decide if that is coverage they desire from an insurance company. It becomes an issue when it is government run or overly regulated. People lose the ability to shop around and find the plan that best fits their needs. It's the price we pay for universal coverage.

I don’t see anything wrong with insurances covering some treatments. I’m not sure how to explain this without using the word normal so sorry if that’s offensive. But being able to get pregnant/father a child when you want is “normal” and healthy functioning in life. So if people are not able to achieve that, I would consider it a health problem and I’d support health insurances covering some of the costs.

Some insurances cover some fertility treatments. I think it’s the insurance company’s right to choose no matter how we feel about it. 
I wouldn’t personally pay for fertility treatments because I feel that if I’m meant to have a baby if my own I will. I thought about this and discussed this with my best friend about what I’d do because I found out a couple years into marriage with my ex with no prevention measures being taken that he couldn’t have kids. I considered what I would do and I decided I would go the adoption route because there are so many kids out there to love. Insurance doesn’t pay for adoption and it’s optional just like IVF is. I think the key with insurance companies is elective or not. 
My insurance doesn’t cover lasik surgery but we do get a discount through our insurance if we have the procedure done. I think fertility treatments should at least have that put in place. 
I’m not opposed to insurance paying for fertility treatments but I’m also not upset that they don’t. My best friend and her husband struggle with fertility and this isn’t something she ever complains about. She just saves her money to do the treatments they’ve decided on. 
My family is pretty big on adoptions too which could play a role in how we feel about this subject.
