Why do people use/choose middle names?

Question

I'm just wondering because here either no middle name is given OR the first name of the godparent of thesame gender (1 middlename) OR the first name of both godparents kind of altered to fit the gender(2 middlenames)
So I'm confused to why people choose a middle name for their babies.
Obviously everyone names their child ad they please, I'm just curious.

I just want him to have a middle name so when I get mad, he knows he’s in trouble bc I used his middle name 😂 it worked on me growing up, that’s for sure

I’d guess the main reason is cultural norms. Just like in your culture people don’t do it, or only do it in certain narrow ways, in other cultures people do use middle names. Same thing.
From a more practical standpoint, I like using middle names because unless your first name is super ridiculous, like a random combination of letters, then there are probably other humans out there with your same first and last name. Including a middle name can help with identity differentiation.

We do two middle names to honour people in our family who mean a lot to us or who isn’t with us anymore. 
I have two middle names so does my brother. My partner does and all his siblings and we wanted to continue this tradition with our children and we have. 
I don’t get why people are so bothered with other people’s children’s names or middle names or why people think it’s weird 🤷‍♀️

I want to give my kids middle names so if they don’t like their first name they always have the choice to go by their middle name

My son has a middle name so I can use it when I'm yelling or scolding him so he knows I mean business! 🤣😂🤣
This is an interesting question, though. I honestly never considered that people dont use a middle name in some places because here it is a standard part of the naming process. We chose to use my husband's first name as my son's middle name. The reasoning had something to do with the fact that he had no say in his 1st born's name (my step son) and I wanted him to really feel like he could take part in ownership of this process of us creating this beautiful life together because he was not allowed to have that at all with his 1st. Also, his own father left him at 5 years old and never came back and he has his own father's middle name, so for him it was kind of a way to do better than was done for him (as our child will always carry his father's name with pride rather than sorrow).

My mom doesnt have a super common name, and she has no middle name. 
Would you believe it, she delivered my sister the same time someone with the same name as her did too. 
She started putting her maiden name down as a middle because they started screwing up the files.

We actually call our kids by both names on a regular basis. But yeah my husband's country of origin, they don't really do middle names. My husband said if we aren't going to use it, don't give them one.

My husband and I chose middle names for our children that are honor names for family members. It makes them special. My side of the family is Hungarian and traditionally did not use middle names. My husbands family has always used honor names for the middle name.
