Birth Story “Oh How Plans Can Change”
The night before my NST and weekly check up, my husband & I were talking about what we planned to do to after we fished in the morning. He suggested that we finish packing the hospital bag. We had it about 70% packed to begin with, as my c-section wasn’t scheduled until 2.21 & we were still using our day to day items, but though it would be a good idea to be ready anyway. Oh how little did we know how our plans would change.
As terrifying as it sounds now, our little guy’s heart rate dropped from 155bpm down to 70bpm during the NST. As there was no apparent reason for this, my OB opted to send me to the Labor & Delivery Triage wing for closer monitoring.
We successfully made it through an hour of monitoring with no issues, but to be on the safe side & to see how our little man was growing; they moved up my bio physical profile ultrasound & he checked out fine. When we returned from our ultrasound, the doctors wanted another uneventful hour on the monitor before letting us go.
It is a very good thing that they wanted the extra hour. During a 4 minute long contraction, that was literally off the charts, our little guy’s heart rate dropped again. Suddenly there were lots of people in our room & I was placed on oxygen to get his heart rate back up.
Despite only being 36 weeks & 5 days; the doctors all felt that it was safer for our our little guy to be out, than in - as they could monitor him much better on the outside. I was admitted & given a shot of betamethazone to help with our little guys lungs. My husband headed home to finish packing the hospital bag.
After a night of round the clock monitoring in Labor & Delivery, at 10:37am on Thursday, February 6th, 2020 our son, Andrew Joseph Fisher was delivered via c-section. He weighed in at 6lbs 15oz & is 19 inches long.
We could not be more grateful for the doctors, nurses and surgeons for all that they did for us & for the safe delivery of our son. It has been a whirlwind 2 weeks to say the least, but we’re all home & healthy and we’re so in love with our son.
