Babying 16 month old?

So my daughter is 16 months old and for a few months I've been letting her feed herself dinner with a spoon and her fingers of course. She makes a huge mess but eats majority if not all of it. When my mum watches her or is around she feeds my daughter her dinner or complains that "she's just making a big mess" or tells my daughter "mummy should be feeding you" I'm just trying to let my daughter learn and discover things through self and copying us when we eat. It's starting to make me question should I be feeding her or letting her do it herself?

We NEVER fed my daughter. It was great for her fine motor skills for her to feed herself! (We did baby led weaning)

You should definitely let her do it!! Babies are supposed to be messy.  your way builds self confidence and allows for choice.

My daughter could already eat with utensils by then. We let her try early on. Messes are part of life and how they learn. Your mom needs to chill and let your baby learn on her own as long as she isn't getting frustrated from trying to feed herself

I’ve never spoon fed my children. They use forks and spoons very well by 18m but decently well by 12m. Do not spoon feed your baby, they need the practice, you totally in the right.

My stepmum is like that with my son. He gets so pissed off with her as he is so independent.

I have never spoon fed my son. He’s 8 months and can feed himself as long as you dip the spoon for him. How are they going to learn if you do it for them? My parents thought I was crazy too until they saw how well he does on his own, I think the judgement is an old school thing

Let her do it on her own!! She needs to learn! Heck we started at 6 months. She makes a mess but the smocks are wonderful.

I never fed my son. Why would you take a step back now if she’s already doing it. She has to learn at some point.

How else will she learn? I think That's fine and will be doing that when my baby starts eating. Making messes is how babies learn. It makes things fun.
