Femara or clomid?

Hi all! Will be going to my first appointment with a specialist in a couple of weeks. I have PCOS and irregular periods. I was wondering which is better, clomid or femara? What are your personal experiences with one or both? I want to go into the appointment kind of having an idea of which medication does what and the successes people have had :) thanks!

Neither has worked for me so far (unexplained infertility) but personally I think femera is the better choice (if you get a choice). Also, since it’s used to treat breast cancer my insurance covers it whereas I had to pay for my clomid.

I used femara and it worked for me. I wouldn’t think you’d need to research/suggest medications to your doctor though - they are the experts and will know what’s best for you given your particular circumstances. Good luck with everything.

I took clomid the first time around and got pregnant on the third round. Starting femera this time because my dr has seen a bunch of research lately that he liked better- specifically a lower amount of multiples but still getting good ovulation rates. I’ll go in at day 21 to see if I ovulate and if I don’t he said we can discuss clomid again since I know I ovulate good with it. I honestly don’t remember bad side effects, mostly because I didn’t care how bad the side effects were if I got pregnant.

I did clomid. Everyone that I knew who took it told me about the ugly side effects it gave them, I took it for 4 cycles and I didnt get any side effects. I ended getting pregnant 4th cycle. TTC for 2 years in total.

So Clomid is an ovulation induction medication which works by tricking your body into thinking estrogen levels are lower which causes the pituitary glad to produce more FSH and LH-- promoting ovulation. Femara is a breast cancer drug that does something similar to the body. Basically when you take these your follicles will grow, with one or more becoming mature enough to produce an egg and release it, IDEALLY. Sometimes trigger shots will be used to ensure ovuoation.
 I personally prefer Femara, myself. Clomid has too many nasty side effects. Don't get me wrong, so does Letrozole/ Femara but they're much more bearable. I didn't ovulate in either initially so I had surgery to remedy the excess follicle situation and responded fine after. I didn't get pregnant but I did ovulate, which was one of my goals. Good luck!
