🌼 Leap Year Baby 🌸

Kenzy

I’ll keep this short & sweet — but I’ve been waiting forever to share my birth story, so pardon my excitement!

Friday 02/28 was our last attempt at a date night that went wrong in every direction. The restaurant we wanted to go to was packed, the movie we went to see was boring — we called it quits pretty early and were in bed by 11pm! I slept on the couch because it was more comfortable for me at that point and my husband slept upstairs.

At 2:45 am I woke up from a dream and figured I might as well go pee while I was awake. As soon as I stood up, I felt a GUSH and my water broke! I started yelling for my husband, who was very sleepy & confused. But once he figured out it was “go time” he jumped into action!

We called the midwife, who said I needed to come in within the hour. We showered, threw last minute items in the bag, and took off for the hospital.

I was 5cm and 100% effaced when I got there around 3:45, but I was only experiencing back contractions & they weren’t too bad on the pain scale.

They put me in a labor room where we tried to get some rest. By 6:00 my contractions were intense, both front and back, and my husband convinced me through my tears it was time for the epidural. We got one in at 6:30, but it didn’t work. They sat me up to try again and I knew I wasn’t going to make it — I felt the urge to push!

They checked me at 6:50 and I was 9cm! By 7:00 I was pushing and by 7:51 baby Selah was born! Accidental all-natural labor! Her heart rate decelerated to the 70’s at one point so they had to do an episiotomy (and I ended up with a second degree tear as well). Labor and delivery definitely didn’t go as planned. For a first time mom, I didn’t think the whole thing would be over in just about 5 hours exactly! I can’t believe she’s here!
