My friend says I can do better??

So my past exes had been what people consider conventionally "attractive" (tall, abs, defined jawline, etc).

But they both ended up cheating on me and were very toxic relationships. After a year of my last break up I reconnected with an old friend.

He is quite the opposite of what I normally go for. I never thought I would like him but after knowing him for a while I really really like him. I have never been happier with anyone and he told me he likes me too. I can't see any imperfections on him despite my friends saying I could do better.

But the thing is now he said he can't afford being in a relationship this year because he is focusing on his studies. My friends say those are just excuses. He told me this after we had sex. He said his decision is not negotiable. He told me not to wait for him but if by next year we still like each other then we can try.

The thing is even after him telling me this we still continue having sex. I want to because I really like him but part of me feel like he's only using me or his interest in me has gone simply because we had sex? He told me last time "this can't go on forever because you'll get even more hurt by the end of this"
