Appropriate Time to Meet Boyfriend’s Parents?

I have been dating my boyfriend for 8 months and his family does not know about me (to my knowledge). They live out of state and will be visiting this month. I casually asked him about meeting them and he told me that he doesn't want me to. His excuse was that they will question and bug him about our relationship. Now, this really bugged me since he spends a lot of time with my family. I can't help but think that he feels embarrassed or even ashamed to be dating me. I'm not going to force him to introduce me to them as I really respect his boundaries, but I feel like this is something I can't let go of. I keep thinking that I will never meet them and he will keep me a secret forever. Only a few of his friends know about me but he never really elaborated so I guess that is something at least. It has been 8 months and we're in a serious relationship- I feel like this is an appropriate time to introduce me but I am letting him go at his own pace. It just makes me a tad sad that I most likely won't ever meet them. Also the fact that we are visiting his home state next month as well. I just don't understand.

Advice? Can anyone relate? Is this something I should be upset about or am I overreacting? 😔
