Induced??

My doctor is giving me the option to be induced at 39 weeks but I’m not sure if that’s the right call, as I am a first time mom. Any advice?

Don’t do it unless it’s necessary. As a 1st time mom, you don’t know how well your body labors and if your body isn’t ready, your induction can be super long. Plus the pitocin contractions were horrible compared to natural ones. You could get lucky and have an easy induction, but not common

Also remember that first labors are typically the most difficult because your body has never done it before. It has nothing to do with "baby not being ready to come out"

I chose induction with my second at 39w3d. They offered and were ok with (1) past 39w (2) I was already dilated (3) no pregnancy concerns. I was bigger and have high anxiety at the end cause my hubby travels for work. My 1st came naturally 38w2d. I’m glad I was given the option and I did. Both of my labors were the same- easy. 8 hours from admittance to baby, 20 min pushing minimally. Induction was just more waiting around time. I’d opt for it again if offered. No horror story. It’s your call. Trust in your body, your instincts & your medical team.

This is a hotly debated topic. Do your research. The old recommendation was absolutely to not induce unless medically necessary. However, a study was done recently (I'll have to search for the link and post it later) showing that risk of c section actually decreased with women who were induced at 39-40 weeks compared to those allowed to go into labor on their own past 40 weeks. It was just one study but really opens up a lot of questions about what we know regarding induction...it could be that c section and complication rates are so high with inductions not because of the process but because they're reserved for pregnancies that need it and therefore are prone to complications in the first place.
All that to say, I would do some research first so you feel confident discussing the facts. Then at your next appointment talk with your doctor about the pros and cons you've seen and ask about any additional risks to you and baby. 
I had an induction at 38.5 weeks with my first baby. But I had hypertension all pregnancy and was induced due to an aged placenta. Baby's heart rate had a hard time with labor and I ended up with a c section. But given the state my placenta was in, a c section may have been an inevitability even if I'd gone into labor on my own so I don't blame the induction.

I was induced at 40 weeks with my first. Only glad I did because I ended up with a precipitous(very fast) labor. I never got any pitocin. Only the cervix ripening pill and my water broke on it’s own which started my contractions. My labor was less than 4 hours once my water broke. I am choosing to be induced at 39 weeks and 2 days with my second because I had such a fast labor first time. I don’t really want to risk having my baby on my living room floor. I know I could still go into spontaneous labor before that at home, but hopefully not. I was miserable at the end of my first pregnancy. I was happy I had made that appointment to get things going, sometimes I wish i would have gone into labor on my own, but with a quick labor like that, I’m glad I was in a hospital. Quick labors are not the norm for your first though!

I asked my dr how he feels about inductions, he said studies show that 39 weeks is the "sweet spot" to induce that statistically leads to fewest complications and c-section. Because the risk of complications with induction increase after 40 weeks, he recommends to get the ball rolling with cervical ripening at 39 weeks with induction around 40 weeks if baby still hasn't come.

I’ve heard good and bad stories of inductions and all of them were quite long compared to going into labor on your own. It took my best friend 3 days to have her daughter and the doctors kept bring up c section😳 she did not give in. I was induced at 35 weeks for medical reasons and I ended up getting a c section but it had nothing to do with being induced.if I had the choice and was having a healthy pregnancy I would go for it. I had an overall good experience my son just had to come out sooner than later . It’s all up to you girl  good luck 👍🍀

I was induced with my first and only agreed bc I was excited to meet her and hold her. Unfortunately I’ve always felt like getting induced was the wrong choice for me bc she wasn’t ready to come out yet and I had to have a c section and now on my 3rd child and with my 2nd I can’t and couldn’t find one dr that will let me try natural bc I’ve had the c section with the first 🤧. In my opinion I’d say to let baby come when they’re ready just from experience.
