Can someone clarify what is actually happening with this whole corona virus thing?

If anyone can explain that would be very helpful! I have a little one and I’m getting really nervous. Everything is selling out around me.

Go read the CDC website. They update it constantly. The reason you may be getting different answers is because some people may not have caught up to the ever changing information. CDC is likely the most reliable/updated resource as of right now.

Also adding- babies are not seriously affected by coronavirus so don’t worry about your little one (though obviously practice hand washing, etc to prevent infection.) 
People most at risk are elderly and immunocompromised so if you have older folks in your life, one thing you can do is offer to pick up their groceries and toiletries so they can avoid crowded places. We’re doing that for my parents because they both have autoimmune conditions and are very vulnerable.

To anyone who is worried about corona virus because of health conditions or an elderly/sick relative here are some fact based, non-panic buying tips :) : 
1. Avoid using public transport as much as possible- if you do have to use it wear gloves AND DO NOT TOUCH YOUR FACE. The virus can live on surfaces for hours and sometimes days so if you touch a surface with the virus on and then touch your face you could infect yourself. 
2. Wear gloves whilst in busy public places like shops, libraries, work places etc. If you don't have disposable plastic gloves (can be bought online) you can wear material ones (have a couple pairs in your bag so you can change them throughout the day) and just put them in the washing machine and the end of each day. And as always: DO NOT TOUCH YOUR FACE. 
3.  Avoid eating and drinking out. As someone who worked in catering I am horrified by what I have seen in Cafes and bars the past week:
Tables are not wiped with spray in between different customers 
Servers touch dirty money and then prepare and serve food and drink without washing their hands in between 
Managers do not send home staff with bad coughs and colds 
Servers often do not wear food safe gloves to prepare and serve food and drink 
Servers touch their mouths and noses and do not wash their hands afterwards 
Delivery drivers cough on their hands and blow their nose and then handle people's takeaways 
Servers do not change their food safe gloves after serving several customers, touching credit card holders, money, multiple surfaces.  
4. Do Not Use anti-bac hand sanitizer unless it has a very high alcohol content (over 60%) as this WILL NOT KILL VIRUSES, It will only kill bacteria. (Corona virus is caused by a virus). Wash your hands regularly instead. 
Due to panic buying it is very difficult to buy alcohol based hand sanitiser anymore so you can make your own. This recipe is approved by the World Health Organisation: 
To make a litre mix: 
751.5ml of  Isopropyl Alcohol strength 98% 
41.7ml of Hydrogen Peroxide strength 3% 
14.5ml of Glycerin  strength 98% pure 
1000ml of water (boil the water first and allow to cool - this will sterilise it).
5. Cleaning door handles and light switches regularly if you or someone you live with is elderly/high risk is a good idea. 
6. Wash your hands double the amount of times you would normally wash them in a day. 
7. Avoid public gatherings with high numbers.

So, I agree CDC and WHO are offering great information. I felt that I wasn’t getting very much though as far as specifics. Information about Coronavirus as I understand from my own internet research:
- It is dangerous or more deadly for those that are older and/or elderly. Scientists believe this is the case because older populations have a stronger immune response to corona-type viruses. Children and the younger don’t have the same type of immune response.
- The immune response and the virus are what causes damage to the lungs.
- I don’t think it is more deadly than the flu but medically it is causing additional deaths and that is concerning
- Its been labeled a pandemic because of the spread of infection worldwide
- Wash your hands, cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze, stay home when you’re sick, practice good hygiene. 
Please feel free to correct me as I’m no expert, this is just from my understanding.
