*Possible TW?* What is more helpful for people w/mental health issues?

Re

*Possible TW? Mentions of suicide*

I’ve never asked something like this, but I don’t know who to ask, and the idea bothered me. Firstly, I’m NOT suicidal.

My family recently received word that my second-cousin (who’s my age) tried to commit suicide. He’s stable and stayed at a center for a few days before he was sent home. My mom and my aunt (her sister) have been keeping in touch with my second-cousin’s mom, my first-cousin. In the most recent update, my first-cousin said that her son had been talking to her so much that “[her] brain hurt.”

I said to my mom that it was good that he was opening up about what had happened. She, on the other hand, showed me her email to her sister (my aunt) about how my second-cousin should go back to where the issues occurred and take everything to God since anything else is just talk.

I agree that my second-cousin should ultimately take his issues to God and work through them that way. However, I’m of the opinion that opening up to someone trusted is important for someone who is depressed and/or suicidal. If trusted people take a fingers-in-ears, “don’t talk to me about this” mentality, the depressed and/or suicidal person won’t have the human connection they’re looking for (and need), will feel shut out and alone, and might do something drastic. (Speaking from somewhat experience since my mom does the same thing with me with bouts of anxiety and depression).
