Can you be friends with your child & still be a good parent?

My daughter is only 1 but she’s already my mini bestfriend😂 i know she’ll always be my friend and my daughter but i get a lot of backlash on this topic so thoughts?

Yes. its balance. its when you stop being a parent that you begin to fail them. 
although i doant see myself being friends with my child until they are older

Yes of course, tbh I think those people are the luckiest. I think it’s definitely a bit easier when theyre older, as under 18 they’re still growing and maturing and learning and sometimes to be a good mom, you have to be the bad guy in their opinion. Once they’re grown hopefully they realize you had to act that way because you love them and you can’t continue to be just as close (:

Why wouldn't someone want to have a good relationship with their child? People often confuse fear for respect and think that in order to have respect you must feel fear, and that's not true.

My mom, my sister, and I are best friends. I call everyone my best friend though lol. But anyway yes I think you can. I know people think if you’re friends with your kids they won’t listen to you, but I think I’m willing to listen more to someone who tries their best to relate to me and have fun. Strict parenting often leads to rebellion. I think friends can keep each other in check. I’m not about to let my friends do something stupid.

I feel like when they’re young and still growing your first priority should be to be a parent not to be a friend. I don’t think most people know how to balance the two in a healthy way and if you find that you’re one of those people then wait until she’s older to be her friend.

My mom has always been my best friend, even during my teenage years where daughters are “supposed” to hate their mothers. She made me mind, I had rules (she was actually very strict) but I respected them. I’m almost 25 and I talk to her multiple times a day over the phone or whatever. And when we’re not in quarantine, I see her probably twice a week. More in the summers because we go for walks! 
So yes, I believe it can work.

Most definitely, my parents were very good at this. I’m fortunate to have learned from them. My 8 year old, and almost 3 year old, are my best friends. I’m lucky to have 2 girls to share my life with, and watch them grow. That doesn’t mean molding them into decent humans goes out the window though. There’s always a balance.

My daughter is 10 and we are great friends BUT she knows I'm a parent first and always will be. She knows her boundaries and VERY VERY rarely needs to be spoken to.
