Newborn sensory activities ?

Question

My son is 2 weeks old and I’m just curious when it becomes more important to do sensory activities with him? Do I make it a priority to do sensory activities now and get him interested or not really? I ask because my mom had told me to make sure I put him on his play mat (has flashing lights and music) everytime he’s awake to get his brain and senses engaged but sometimes he’s just really not to into it and will stare off into space or looks around completely ignoring the lights. I’m not sure if that’s just normal since he’s only 2 weeks or if I should be working harder to get him interested in the lights if that’s even possible? I hope that even makes any sense lol thank you guys for any help!

Usually around 2-3 months is more age appropriate. They can’t really see that well at 2 weeks old and still getting used to the world outside the womb. Too much stimulation can actually make newborns fussy. Just feed, change and snuggle at this point. No pressure, hon.

At two weeks they want to look at mommy and daddy. Add a mirror to his tummy time or some quiet music. To many flashing lights and songs will be to much. His whole world is a new sensory experience right now. Offer him different fabrics touch, read a book, sing a song. No need for lights and what not it’s overwhelming enough for them.

We had a therapist tell us that removing their gaze from things like that was a sign of over stimulation.  You can do tummy time on your chest or lap so that you can interact with baby.  If you want to use something else, mirrors or black/white pictures are good at an early age.

My two week old isn't interested in anything but a book I have that's black, white, and red. It's the only thing she can see. I read all 4 words in the book 3 times or so then she falls asleep. That's enough for now.

I would just keep focus on tummy time and letting him stare off, honestly. Lol if i see my 2 week old staring intently in a direction while he's up I'll move closer so he can see it, but i haven't bothered with a play mat or anything because their eyesight isn't that great and they don't have total control over their arms and hands so it's pretty useless. 
When my little guy is awake I prop him on my chest or belly for tummy time and talk to him, even if he's staring off into space, once he's over it I'll prop him into a sitting position if he's not ready to go back to sleep yet (usually propped on my legs if I'm in bed) and let him just look around. I keep it simple to avoid over stimulating.
