Looking for Statistical Clarity

So it’s my understanding that the daily number that comes in of corona-related deaths are not necessarily people who passed away the day before but over a span of the last couple of weeks, but their tests weren’t confirmed positive until now. So my question is, when they say we’re going to hit a peak in deaths over the next couple of weeks, are those deaths actually taking place over the next couple of weeks or are they taking place now but we won’t know for sure their deaths are corona-related until their test results come in over the next couple of weeks? Do they even know? If those deaths are occurring now, then wouldn’t the peak technically be now? Does anyone have a source that reports dates that the deaths actually occurred? Sorry, this is so grim. Just looking for clarity.
