Whats the process?

Can anyone share how they went about setting up a home birth from the beginning? Is it only done by private companies? Can you see an OB until its time to deliver? I have read that its only for low risk pregnancies which makes sense but has anyone had Gestational diabetes (technically high risk) and still allowed to home birth?

I have had GD two out of my 3 pregnancies so im almost certain i will have it again if i get pregnant. However, all 3 of my deliveries were uncomplicated vaginal births and my biggest baby was 8lbs 1oz at term. I realize that deliveries can be unpredictable sometimes but i feel confident that i could do a home birth if i have another child but im just not sure how i can go about it. Can anyone share their experience?

I've been with the same midwife/practice since my first pregnancy (interviewed get at 7 weeks over the phone, first appointment was 11 weeks). She does all my appointments, I've never seen an OB. I looked up home birth midwives in my area. There are different kinds, so try to find a CNM, they can prescribe medications. Actually the first one I contacted didn't have availability because she was going to be out of town for my due date, but recommended other providers in my area and I picked one of those. I would recommend seeing the same person/practice from start to finish because then you don't have to transfer info and they can prepare you for what you need. I haven't had GD, but I was GBS+ and my midwife had the capability of administering antibiotics during labor. I've seen a lot of people lately saying they couldn't do a home birth because of GBS but you can.

You have to find a midwife who delivers at home. You usually have to pay out of pocket and you want to get in there schedule early because they only take a few patients per month so they dont have births overlapping. Start looking up midwives in your area and start setting up interviews to get the ball rolling.
