How did you ween off of purées?!

My son chokes every time he eats anything that isn’t a purée

My son has a sensitive gag reflex too, so we started by giving him Gerber baby food puffs and Baby Num-Nums because they dissolve in his mouth, so as long as he sucked on them a little bit they were easy to swallow.

Gagging is a normal process that kids have to learn to deal with to learn how to eat table food. Choking is not. When my babies started Table food, I sat in front of them to closely monitor if they were ready to process certain foods, and there was a lot of gagging. But gagging prevents choking! I try to serve foods that are the size of my fingernail and finger mashable to cut down on the amount of gags though. 
I started with Gerber yogurts and puffs, then moved to Cheerios and oatmeal, and now my 8 month old eats things like grilled chicken and bananas for lunch. 🤦

I started trying to give him something chunky once a week. The first thing he ate was a cut up banana.

Is he choking?? Or gagging?? Gagging is normal.

I started moving to more mashes
Doing like 1/2 purées 1/2 mash and slowly increasing the mash part. My son can do pretty much anything that doesn’t need lots of chewing like salad or harder veggies and meats now.
