“Getting the cost right is not simply a matter of valuing ‘profits over people’ as the social media memes suggest. Rather, even in times of crisis, the ability operate in a functioning economy is important to the people within it”. BINGO. This is the whole point of why many sides oppose lengthening “lockdowns”. You have to have a basic - college level knowledge of economics to understand this though. It’s clear by reading a lot of these posts that you aren’t going to get that kind of engagement on this app. Super interesting read though! We can only hope most restrictions are lifted in a well planned manner in May and we continue to monitor hospital capacities and adjust where needed. After all, that was the whole point of this in first place.

Sure we should keep all that in mind, but some of the conclusions really stretch credulity. First of all, a death toll of 5000 was laughable even two weeks ago when this was written.  Deaths in the US have already exceeded 20,000.  
Second, unemployment peaked around 11% back in 2010, and the number of opioid deaths was half what it was in 2018 when unemployment was under 4%. While I do think unemployment plays a role in opioid use, there’s no simple direct relationship. There just isn’t enough evidence to draw the conclusion the article draws on that increase - it’s more of a philosophical supposition.  
And suicides, crime, etc.  I mean,  even if I add up all the annual stats they mention - 67,367 total drug deaths, 22,246 alcoholic liver disease deaths, 48,344 suicides and calculate deaths per day (378) it’s still so significantly less than the number of people currently dying from covid every day in the US, that we’d have to see an increase of 500% of all of those to rival it.
