Who should sit in the front seat?

So husband, wife and a family friend were going out together... husband is driving, family friend hops in and sat at the front... wife told family friend that she wants to sit at the front and asked family friend to sit at the back... was the wife petty for doing this?

Wife should always sit in front unless she doesn’t want to. I think that’s super weird for the friend to assume they can sit up front in the wife’s car.

I always offer our guest the front seat - there is typically more room & it’s just polite.

Was the friend male or female? Is the friend originally wife or husbands? 
When my husband and I go places with people, friends or family, we sit accordingly to “who’s” friend it is. Family friend is male, chances are they want to sit near my husband and talk etc. I see my hubby all the time, I’ll let the friend sit and catch up/chit chat.

I offer the front seat to my guests, always. But I don’t think the wife was petty. I would be a little put off if someone just went ahead and took the front seat before it was offered.

Kinda weird that the family friend just hopped into the front seat. There is usually some sort of etiquette. Like if I were the wife I would offer the front seat and if I were the family friend I would most likely say “so sweet of you to offer, but you definitely should sit up front with your husband.” But I guess it also depends on how close they all are.

I have long legs AND get severely car sick. So unless it’s someone taller than me or someone older than me (ie my husband’s mother) I usually get the front seat.
