STIMULUS CHECK BANK ACCOUNT CLOSED?!?!

Sorry I’m advance I have no idea where to post this. 
Hey guys! So I filed in 2019. And well, I closed the bank account I used for the irs then.. I went to the website and it says it’ll use the bank account I had on file to deposit my stimulus check. However, because that account is closed. Where would it go? I no longer bank with them. Would it then be a mailed check or will it somehow find my new bank account? IRS sight said it’d be sent out today... I’m so confused. I even called the old bank to be sure the account was closed. It’s been almost over a year now it’s been closed. Thanks in advance!

There's absolutely no way for them to magically know what your new bank account is. So you'll end up with a paper check.

I feel like you keep posting about this but no one can really give you an answer. I think you need to contact the bank that your old account was held with and then you might need to reach out the IRS, I am sorry that you are in this pickle and I can totally see how it sucks. If you are the one that's been posting multiple times the reason your not receiving an answer is because I don't think anyone has one.

If the account has been closed a year, then you didn’t get your 2019 tax returns in it. You’re thinking of your 2018 returns. 
Whatever account you got your return in recently will be the one it goes to. If you haven’t filed yet this year, a check will be mailed.

Did you file your 2019 taxes in 2020? If you did the IRS will direct deposit into the most recent account you listed on those and not the one listed on the 2018 return that you filed in 2019. Make sense?

Hi I work at a bank.  So from my experience when someone closes an account and a direct deposit hits that closed account, you essentially have to wait for the bank to reject the direct deposit.  Once that happens it gets sent back to the send of the money...in your case the irs.  Once that happens they can issue you the funds again normally in a check form.  I would advise you to make changes with the irs immediately to see if they are able to submit a different direct deposit.  Know though the initial process can take up to 2 weeks.

There is a process that exists already for treasury/irs checks. The bank will bounce the ach back. I am not sure what they will do after they get notice of failure but you should inquire. I know it is hard to wait and may be financially difficult but these are very big IT setups created in a small amount of time. I would expect them to expand information and robustness of the system as time goes on.

I work for a bank, if the account is close we can’t accept the deposit. We will reject it and send it back within 2 business days. So it will go back to the sender, the IRS. Contact them and update your new account number otherwise they will mail you the check. You can also check in with whoever you filed your taxes to see if they can update the account number for you
