Vaginal itch/burn after period?

This isn’t the first time I’ve had an itch down there after my period, it was the pads I was using so I switched to cotton. Being married I try to avoid having sex with my husband bc I feel so gross. Then I hear friends saying if I don’t give it up he will find it somewhere else. So by the 3rd day of my period I feel it’s more lighter so I’ll give in. But I noticed last night on my last period date when I’m intimate my vagina burned and it hurt. I was so uncomfortable. Why does that happen. Is this common, should I worry?
