When do newborns use dummies?

I’ve seen people use them straight away, also others wait till baby is 1-2 months.. I know each baby is different but is it safe to use within first month?

In my NICU they had posters up saying dummies can reduce the risk of cot death 🤷‍♀️ so we used straight away.

My husband didn’t want to use pacifiers at all, and I respected that. Then around 6 weeks, I was re-hospitalized and taken for imaging. Our son wanted comfort but I wasn’t there to nurse and my husband tried everything he could to calm him. He finally asked a nurse for a pacifier (we didn’t have any since we weren’t using them). When I came back to the room, my husband was in the dark with our son sound asleep using a pacifier. It was a life saver many times to comfort our son. He’s almost two now and only has it at night. We’re going to wean him off it soon...we’re just not looking forward to that battle.

I’m not using one at all. I was never given one (I was a nicu baby (twin pregnancy born at 32 weeks) and my mom just figured it was one less thing to take away. Growing up I seen way to many kids dependant on them and beyond a year it’s not good for the growing in teeth. So I’ve decided to just never offer it ! But I’ve seen people give one at birth for the most part! I think it’s personal preference unless your doctor has something to say about it! Me and my sisters turned out fine without it and my twin never gave her son one either!

Gave one from day 3 (literally as we were leaving the hospital) because she just wanted to suckle everything for comfort. Gave a bottle (expressed milk) from day 5 as she couldn’t latch. She’s a month of turning 2 now, still breastfeeds, refused bottles from 8 months but still loves her dummy for sleep.
I’d do the same next time.
