Okay this is probably a totally dumb question - how do the baby monitors work that connect to phone apps? Does the app have to be open to know if baby is awake? Or Does it alert you if baby is crying? I’m sure it varies slightly from model to model but just a general idea would be great thank you!

We use his monitor mostly at night and then for naps during the day - lately we’ve been out in the yard while he naps and the signal doesn’t reach so it means we are constantly having to run back to the house to check the monitor.
