Traveling with two kids fly or drive?

So my husband and I live 12 hours from

My family. Plane tickets for later this summer are extremely CHEAP right now however, rental car prices are still high! 😫 My husband and I agree flying would be easier on us and the kids(both under 2 yrs old) but not sure we can afford a rental car for how long I plan on staying there(couple weeks).

If we drive I thought about driving late at night so that the kids will be sleeping most the way and it might be easier on them and we wouldn’t need a rental. But man, a short easy flight seems much better than a 12+ hour drive.

I asked around and none of my family has a spare car we can borrow.

Anyone have experience with any of these? Traveling with young kids?
