Do you feel it matters that as a black female, I should be looking at hbcu’s more than PWI?

I’m in the middle of wanting to attend an hbcu because I feel like I’ll make the black community happy- but then I don’t mind a PWI because there’s diversity and they’re more closer to where I live.

I attended both. In a HBCU there’s pride in being black and there’s a better feeling of belonging. In a PWI, of course you will find other black people there, but I was never around white people before starting college so it was a bit weird for me. There’s also always that chance of being looked at wrongly, feeling like you have to bring down your natural personality to fit in with them, and just dealing with some racism or prejudice. Also when I took a history class, all the black students were excited to talk about slavery whereas the white students were completely over it and annoyed. Like it bothered them. There’s a lot that goes into it but you don’t only have to consider HBCU’s because you’re black, you can go whenever you want. Definitely tour the colleges before committing.

I attended an amazing PWI with a great black student population. We didnt miss a beat from the "black girl magic", Black greek life, comraderie, and outstanding education at the 2 neighboring HBCU's. Do what you feel is best for your future. The entire black community will not have to live your life only you will.

I did both. I actually went to pwi then participated in the “National Student Exchange” program where u study at another university for a semester or two and still earn college credit. They both hv pros and cons.

Additionally my (black) husband did not grow up in a hyper dense/super black area like I did and needed the experinace of being around different types of black people (other than his family he didn't REALLY KNOW any😢). While every teacher/classmate I had from 2nd-9th grade was a black person; I was alreday immersed. It could possibly serve a black person with a limited black experience to go to an HBCU at little more...but again it depends on what you hope to gain from the comprehensive collegiate experience.
