HELP how do I get rid of mice?!!!😭

Question

I live in a townhouse and my neighbour is an alcoholic. He left one day and never came back. His house was abandoned for over a year. We complained to the town about his overgrown yard and the state of the house but they never did anything. Long story short the house was is disgusting and mouse infested. It was sold and new owners are currently cleaning it up. I heard scratching a few times and have just found mouse shit under my sink where I keep my garbage bins (which I will empty every night now). Also in the drawer under my stove that probably had some crumbs we never use it. I think the mice came from next door. It’s a newer house 3yrs old we checked all our vents and the foundation in the fall and didn’t see anywhere mice could enter we have screens. How do I get rid of them. I’m so devastated. We placed traps that will electrocute them when they enter, where we found droppings but I’m worried more will find there way in from the house next door. Also we can’t really call pest control with COVID. We will have to talk to our new neighbours. Anyone successfully got rid of mice!?? What did you do? I have a ten month old so we won’t be using any poison .

Traps and pest control. I know you said you probably can't due to covid but having a mouse infestation can cause disease and I think that's urgent enough to warrant a visit.
Id call around anyways and see if anyone will come out

Apparently peppermint oil or mothballs help. Please don't put down traps (glue or otherwise, they're so inhumane). In my country you can get humane rat traps, and then Owl Rescue will come and empty and use them as food (if people want them dead rather than just out their houses).

Sticky traps work well. We have had to use the rat sized ones for mice though.  They love peanut butter.  We tried a few poison traps with a maze like trap but never caught any.  You will have to be vigilant and stick with it.  It will probably take a while until the new owners get the place next to you cleaned up.  Keep looking for places they can get in. Steel wool helps block the holes in a way that they can’t chew through.  Don’t leave anything out that might attract them - move food out of their reach, take the garbage out daily, and wipe off the table, counters, and floors at least daily, after every meal of you can.  It sucks I get it.  We moved last fall and had a lot of mice in our new place and it sucked.  (We are out in a more rural area so it’s to be expected but it’s still so gross.)

Mice can fit through really really tiny spaces I’d say stick to the traps and clean extra well. I’d also find an exterminator who is open (they’ve been deemed essential)

We tried traps and all that when we had mice. We took the super old fashion route and let our cats in the areas where the mice were.... worked like a charm. I know its not the most realistic but its nature 🤷🏼‍♀️

We had scratching in our attic from mice In a house we were renting. The owner didn’t patch the roof good and they came in for warmth in the winter. We hired an exterminator who came and after one visit, never had anymore problems with mice again. He did a good job getting rid of them.
