Poppy Seeds: Fact or fiction?

I have heard stories of people being investigated post birth because they ate an everything bagel or something with poppy seeds in it close to labor.. is it true this can make you test positive for opioids? I forgot about this until I was mid-bite this morning!

Depending on the test, yes you can test positive but one bagel shouldn’t do it. I saw someone post about this a couple days ago. Also my cousin has had this happen to her but she was a daily poppy seed bagel eater

You would have to eat a ton of poppy seeds to have a positive test

Opium is made from the poppy plant, so poppy seeds can raise your opioid levels. One bagel shouldn't put you over the limit to test positive, but if you're worried mention it to your doctor

It's true! I had a poppy seed bagel every day, for three days, before my 12 week OB visit. I had a routine urine and blood samples taken. I never thought anything of it. That is until I received a phone call 48 hours later, asking me to come in as the doctor wanted to speak to me about something urgent. Mind you, my head started racing thinking something was wrong with my baby, only to be told that I tested positive for opioids. I absolutely started cracking up-and asked if my OB was joking. She said no. I looked her in the eyes and told
her that I've never had an alcoholic drink in my life let alone try drugs. She said she believed me but was required to immediately retest me. I said absolutely, as I had nothing to hide. Test came back clear, thank the lord 🙌🏼! Only diff, the morning I had my original OB visit, I had finished the bagels my husband bought. Lets just say, I was dreaming about poppy seed bagels and didn't have another until I was safely discharged from the hospital 🤣

Why would they even drug test you unless they were worried that something was wrong with the baby?

100%. We had a work catered breakfast and my friend at poppy seed bread. Went to the doctors that same day and they needed to Induce her. She wasn't able to take her baby home without having a responsible care giver and she has to have someone else with her while around the baby. They eventually dropped it after a while but it was a long hassle.
